The Woodstock Community Food Shelf (WCFS) has found a new home in Unit 1E of the Mill Building on Maxham Meadow Way — just a few minutes’ walk down the road from the food shelf’s current location. The new space was, until recently, the home of The Mill School childcare center.
At approximately 1,900 square feet — nearly triple the size of the food shelf’s current space — the new home will provide a roomier space for staff and guests along with shorter wait times.
The new venue will open on July 11, after a two-day move beginning on July 9. The food shelf has secured a grant from the Vermont Food Bank in order to hire movers for the labor-intensive move, which will include moving eight refrigerators, said Judi Greene, chair of the WCFS.
According to Greene, the impending move was not a given. “We weren’t expecting to move,” she told the Standard. “We had a really great location. We were being well looked after by our landlord, Rick Tobiasson and Lee Barnum. We had a good thing going — except that every decision we make is based on the amount of space we have, and we’re literally bursting at the seams.”
Once the food shelf reopens, visitors will be guided to the new space with road and sidewalk signs, said Greene. She noted that the food shelf will be located on the north side of the Mill Building, which is on the opposite side from the building’s main entrance. The new food shelf will have about 20 parking spaces in the rear of the building, said Greene.
