On Friday, the Wasps Girls Lacrosse team pulled out a 10-9 win in overtime against the Green Mountain Valley (GMV) Gumbies.
The game was tightly contested with both teams holding a two point lead at different points in the first half, and a second half with the teams tied as often as not. Despite the sudden rainfall in the latter part of the second quarter and a two point deficit caused by four unanswered goals, the Woodstock Wasps never stopped playing hard. “They left everything out there,” said coach Amanda Hull.
The Wasps were down 7-5 at the half, but team captain Maeve Roylance said the Wasps’ mentality was the key to their eventual victory in overtime. “We took a second to stop and evaluate what we need[ed] to do. But mostly, we stayed positive,” she said.
The Wasps kept the game tied, ending regular time 9-9. In overtime, winning the first possession led them to a quick goal and the victory.
The GMV Gumbies were undefeated at 3-0 before Friday, while Woodstock came in sporting a modest 1-1 record.
Team captain Aleks Cirovic said, “I think a lot of people thought we weren’t going to be as good with all the seniors we graduated, but I’m pretty sure we just proved them wrong. Don’t count us out.”
