Bruce A. Wright, 83

Bruce A. Wright, 83, of Hartford, N.Y., passed away peacefully on June 8, 2026, holding the hand of his wife, Barbara. Born December 5, 1942 in Denver, Colo., he was the son of Ralph and Helen (Carpenter) Wright.

Shortly after his birth, his father packed the family station wagon and drove across the country to Vermont, stopping frequently to add water to cool the engine. They settled in Woodstock, where Bruce spent his childhood playing baseball, fishing, skiing, hiking, camping, caddying, and launching golf balls from their hilltop home on Pine Street to the rooftops below. He graduated from Woodstock High School in 1960.

Bruce found his way to Castleton State College in Castleton, Vt., where friends convinced him to join the soccer team. As a defender with a booming kick, he helped Castleton win the 1964 NAIA National Championship and made many lifelong friends in the process. He was named to the 1964 NAIA All-Tournament Team.

More importantly, Castleton is where he met the love of his life, Barbara (Shortle) Wright. After swearing to never see him again after their first date on Sept. 14, 1963, Barb fell for Bruce shortly thereafter and they enjoyed 63 wonderful years together. They married on Aug. 24, 1968 and built their dream house in 1971, where they raised four sons, hosted innumerable parties and holidays, and made their home until 2026. Bruce never tired of working around the house, in his garage, or on his lawn. A cold drink watching the sunset from the deck was his nightly reward.

After college, Bruce taught elementary school in a one-room schoolhouse in Vermont for a short time before serving in the Army Reserves. After completing his service, he and his new bride both began careers teaching at Argyle Central School District in 1968. Bruce taught generations of Argyle students and impacted many lives through his work. He was a dedicated teacher in the classroom, as well as on the soccer field, baseball field or basketball court, where he coached hundreds of youth athletes of all ages.

Bruce enjoyed playing soccer well into his 40s and had the scars to prove it. He was an avid hunter, fisherman and hiker in his adulthood, enjoying hunting trips in the Adirondacks, the Northeast Kingdom of Vermont, Wyoming and Colorado, fishing trips on Lake Champlain and Lake Ontario, and becoming an Adirondack 46er. He loved to be active and outdoors, like a true Vermonter.

Bruce was a devoted husband and father who never missed a game, concert or other school activities. He was famous for recording soccer games, capturing every moment of the action on his camcorder except for goals, when he would unfailingly point the camera at the ground so he could watch for himself.

For the past 19 years, he has truly cherished his role as “Papa” and “Grandpa.” He loved spending time with his grandchildren, having them follow him around the house or yard so he could teach them things they could not learn from an electronic device. Even in his 70s and 80s, he was always learning and always teaching. His grandchildren will miss him dearly.

Bruce was predeceased by his parents, Ralph and Helen Wright.

He has left decades of happy memories with his wife, Barbara, and his other surviving family: his brother, Dennis (Tuesday), and sister Susan (Philip Whelpton); his son, Mark (Maria), and their children, Sean and Casey; his son, Steven (Kerri) and their children, Jack, Catherine and Tommy; his son, Graig, and his children, Jonah, Iris and Dahlia; and his son, John (Sarah), and their children, Caroline, Claire and Charlie. He will also be remembered by many nieces, nephews, cousins, and great friends from both Vermont and New York.

At Bruce’s request, there will be no calling hours or services. A celebration of life will be announced at a later date.
