On Sunday, July 13 at approximately 10:05 p.m. the Bethel Fire Department received an emergency alarm dispatch that required immediate assistance. A fully involved structural fire had broken out at 1627 River Street.
Paul Feeney, Bethel Fire Chief, told the Standard, “We immediately called Barnard and South Royalton stations for additional support, as well as Stockbridge, Tunbridge, and Sharon for a tanker shuttle to ensure adequate water supply.” The fire had consumed the entire home but was contained within two hours of the fire department’s arrival. Feeney continued, “After cleanup, we vacated the premises at around 2 a.m. with a fully extinguished fire and no injuries to the homeowner.”
Homeowner Fayette Severance made it out of the home unharmed with his dog, Oso. “Thankfully, the wife and children were not on the premises at the time. The family cat, however, was tragically lost in the fire. Afterwards, I called for a fire investigation to uncover the cause. Our inspector concluded that an electrical fire was started by a faulty extension cord,” Feeney said.
The Bethel Fire Chief concluded, “Everything went smoothly, and we are grateful to our neighboring fire departments for their help in getting this fire under control so quickly.”
A GoFundMe has been set up to support the family as they face being forced to rebuild their home after its complete devastation. Donations can be made at https://www.gofundme.com.
