Eight of the eighteen seats on the Mountain Views Supervisory Union School Board (MVSU) will be up for election by Australian ballot at Town Meeting on Tuesday, March 3.
Six incumbent representatives from Killington, Plymouth, Reading, and Woodstock will seek reelection to their board slots. In Pomfret and Woodstock, two representatives have decided to step down from the MVSU governing body and will not seek reelection.
People interested in running for the school board must complete a Nominating Petition and Consent of Candidate form, both of which are available from the Vermont Secretary of State’s website (tinyurl.com/47ydf5eh) or from the local town clerk’s office.
Candidates are required to submit a petition signed by 30 voters or 1% of the town voter checklist — whichever is fewer. The petition must clearly indicate the office and term length prior to circulating it for signatures, and the candidate’s name must appear on the petition exactly as it appears on the voter checklist. Completed forms should be turned in to the town clerk no later than 5 p.m. on Monday, January 26.
Here’s a snapshot of the expected races for MVSU School Board seats in five of the seven towns in the supervisory union school district, as well as the intentions of all incumbents and declared candidates as conveyed in conversations with the Standard over the past month.
Killington — 1 seat available
One board seat is available for a three-year term. Incumbent representative Anne Karl said last weekend that she plans to seek reelection.
Plymouth — 1 seat available
Incumbent school board member Josh Linton said Sunday he will seek reelection to a three-year term.
Pomfret — 1 seat available
Lydia Locke, one of the two school board representatives from Pomfret, will step down in March following four years of service on the school district’s governing body.
The open seat is for a three-year term.
Reading — 2 seats available
Representative Anna Sessa said Sunday that she will seek reelection to another three-year term on the school district’s governing Board. For the second representative from Reading, Gina McAllister said Monday that she plans to seek election to the remaining two years of a three-year term vacated last year by Adam Ameele.
Woodstock — 3 seats available
Three-term MVSU board representative Sam DiNatale announced last month that she will not seek reelection to another three-year term.
There are two additional school board seats from Woodstock up for election on Town Meeting Day. Both incumbents will seek reelection — MVSU School Board vice chair John Williams to a three-year term, and Woodstock Union High School/Middle School Rebuild Working Group chair Seth Webb to the remaining year of an unexpired three-year seat previously held by Ernie Fernandez.
